about me

I'm a science journalist and editor based on Cape Cod in Massachusetts (on Nauset Wampanoag land). At the moment, I freelance for an assortment of publications. I primarily focus on marine, environmental, and conservation science, though I like to say that I’m a science omnivore. You can find my reporting on my home page.

I am the producer of Gastropod, a podcast that looks at food through the lens of science and history. It’s a delicious look at the many ways that food is intertwined with our history, our culture, and our lives. (More about the show on my Podcasting page.)

Additionally, I work as an editor and a researcher for science films. (More on that on my Film page.)

From June 2020 through January 2021, I served as Mongabay’s inaugural Sue Palminteri Wildtech Reporting Fellow, focusing on the intersection of conservation and technology.

I have a background in journalism, environmental science and marine conservation from Northeastern University. I hold a Master's degree in science writing from MIT. My career has mixed freelancing alongside working as staff in the newsrooms of Futurism, Undark Magazine, and Nautilus magazine, as well as other odds and ends — an environmental nonprofit, a national defense laboratory, a seagrass research lab, a coastal cleanup organization, and a green tech accelerator.

When not writing, you can often find me near, on, or under the water. (Example A below.)
